The following is a list of questions that we are frequently asked about Nachi-Katsuura Town.

Q: Do the Japanese people speak English?

A: Generally, no. It is sometimes really hard to find English speakers,especially in smaller towns.

Q: What are the famous things in Nachi-Katsuura Town?

A: Nachi-Katsuura has many things to explore:

  1. World Heritage (Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes, Nachi Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Japan,
    Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine and Nachi-san Seiganto-ji Temple and Fudarakusan-ji Temple)
    and nature,
  2. Onsen (spas),
  3. fresh tuna including the tuna market and tuna dishes and more.

Q: Where is the Nachi-Katsuura Information center?

A: Our office is located on the first floor of Kii-Katsuura Station. We are open from 8:30am to 6:00pm,
365days a year.

Q: How long is the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route?

A: Its total length is 307.6km/191miles. In fact, the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes consist of
five pilgrimage routes, two, Nakahe-ji* and Ohe-ji*, of which run through Nachi-Katsuura Town.
*some call them Nakahe-chi and Ohe-ji respectively.

Q: Is Whale Watching available?

A: Yes, but it is available only from late April to the end of September.

Q: Where Can I Walk and Hike?

A: We prepare for varieties of walking courses, some of which are a part of the Kumano Kodo
Pilgrimage routes. Please check this link for detailed information.

Q: Can I see the tuna fish market at the Katsuura port?

A: Yes. You can see it from the second floor deck without reservation.
 The auction usually starts at 7 in the morning and lasts half an hour
to a few hours depending on the catch. The market closes Saturdays and the days before
national holidays. It may also irregularly close without notice.

Q: How Can I get to the boarding pier for Hotel Urashima or Hotel Nakanoshima?

A: It is a 7 minute walk from JR Kii-Katsuura station.
You can embark the Ki-no-Matsushima cruising tour from the same pier.

Q: Where can I withdraw cash?

A: You can make withdrawals at the local convenience store, local banks and post offices.
Please be aware that these services are not available at night.
